Ever pondered about conquering some sort of task?
Some sort of competition.
How about being successful in life?
I have been doing my reflections and often wondered:
Why are some people so capable?
Accomplishing everything thrown in their way; how do they do it?
There has to be a set of rules that they abide by.
Because they're flawless at handling just about everything,
there has to be a standard set of 'house rules' that they play by.
Just like when trying to impress a girl:
You take note of what she likes.
You get her what she wants, what she likes.
You do this because you want her to want to know more about you.
You take note of what she doesn't like.
You don't do what she doesn't like.
You do this because you don't want her to have a bad impression of you.
So it boils down to knowing how to get into the good books of a person.
You know what to do, how to do it; what not to do, how to avoid doing it.
Your 'house rules' could be
looking for how you should (or should not) portray yourself;
the correct things to say (if you have to communicate);
what are the necessary steps to take to succeed in what you are doing;
how will those steps affect future events;
how will those steps be affected by other events.
And these set of 'house rules' applies to other things as well.
Take for example, a game of DotA.

You want to portray yourself as a fierce harasser
(so they don't even want to try to go near their creeps)
You want to lead the team, which isn't an easy job.
(you have to know your team's weaknesses and try to point it out them in a suitable manner)
You want to know what's coming and how to get around it and how fast you can get over that problem.
(so if you foresee a gank coming for you, you try to counter that by getting your silencer to cast global silence before storming them)
Your enemies will think twice before doing anything
..then you exploit your enemies' weaknesses and win the game.
That's my take on why smart and capable people are what and who they are.
They've these set of general guidelines to follow by and have done their analysis, which allows them to know what's coming forth.
When they know all these, they're already half way into success.
Of course there are other factors that they take into consideration that puts them on the path to success.
It applies to everything.
So get cracking and set your own 'house rules'.
